Turkish Students’ Writings XIII
Here, I’m introducing writings of my former Turkish students from when I’ve taught in Istanbul for four years. I love going through my students’ writings in order to remember them.
I hope you appreciate reading this.
The following was written by a student who was unemployed yet graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering:
Describe your favorite place in your city.
“Istanbul is the most popular and best city in Turkey. It’s so crowded. Many tourists come to Turkey for Istanbul because it’s historical city. It has many old places. For example Dolmabahce Palace (the ‘c’ in ‘Dolmabahce’ is a ‘ch’ sound), Ayasofya, Sultan Ahmet, etc. All of these are the most touristic areas in Istanbu. If are Asian continent of Istanbul, you can see the European continent and if people want, they can travel between these continents. ‘Kiz Kulesi’ (Maiden’s Tower) is the most popular area on Asian side. If you want to take a photo in Uskudar, you can see Kiz Kulesi with Galata Tower. That’s awesome. If people are at Galata Tower, they can see Istanbul clearly. In conclusion, it’s a beautiful city to visit. Everybody must come to Istanbul. Istanbul is the capital of world.”

What are your plans for your next holiday?
“On my next holiday, I’m going to visit Mardin. I’m going by plane, but I hate planes. There, I’m going to visit Ulu Mosque, black sand. Later, I’m going to a safari center and I’m going to run along historical places.
The next day I’m going to eat an onion kebap because the temperature is high. it always summer. It will be my first time in Midyat. It is going to be a fantastic and interesting holiday. My summer holiday will be very nice.”

Describe your favorite place in your city.
“Coppadocia
My favorite city is Nevsehir (the ‘s’ in this place name is an ‘sh’ sound). Nevsehir is a good place. The city is peaceful. In my opinion, the most beautiful place in Nevsehir is Coppadocia. Coppadocia is a different place. There is very interesting history. There are people live very lucky.
Nevsehir is a small city but there are many villages in the city. Beautiful people living in villages. My favorite places Coppadocia is Nevsehir. There are very interesting fairy chimney. Every year, hundreds of people visiting Nevsehir. In the early hours of the morning, the sky is filled with balloons. Sky looks very colorful. Hundreds of people ride balloons. Because, people like adrenaline. I am afraid riding balloons.
As a result, everybody should go to Nevsehir. People should see Coppadocia. I think everybody should meet and chat to people living.”

Describe your favorite place in your city.
“I lived in Istanbul. Transportation in Istanbul is easier than transportation in Giresun. Istanbul is more crowded than Giresun because Istanbul is bigger than Giresun. Istanbul is beautiful than Giresun.
Next, Istanbul is the first longest industrialized city in Turkey. There are many kinds of occupations around Istanbul. most people in Giresun are engaged in farming.
In conclusion, having lived in both cities, I can say that Istanbul is completely different from Giresun. Istanbul has more traffic. Giresun, thus few problems health problems related to stress.”
Written by a 16-year-old student who only came to the language school which was located in a more conservative part of Istanbul because of me since she and I weren’t religious conservatives.
What are your plans for your next holiday?
“After, I am going to take English course because I want to speak english and I want to visit London so I should study english. I like english language because, in my opinion, english is very good and nice. I will very study for my lessons. That’s all! Finally, I am going to go to cafe with my friends.
My plans for my holiday. I want to go to the Sile (the ‘s’ in this place name is an ‘sh’ sound) because Sile is nice and peaceful place. We can go to restaurants and we can go to party. Second, I am going to read books. I am going to go to shopping and I am going to meet my friends. Maybe, I am going to go to the gym. Next, I am going to visit my grandmother. Then, I am going to watch new films. I am going to many cinemas because I like cinemas. I don’t like watch films at home because generally home is noisy. Cinema is better than home. Cinema is very quickly place that’s very good for people. Then, I am going to take a new make-up. After, I am going to visit different city.”

Describe your favorite place in your city.
“Istanbul and Nevsehir (the ‘s’ in this place name is an ‘sh’ sound).
Istanbul is very big city. So very crowded noisy. Every day hundreds of people visit to Istanbul or arrive. People very tired in Istanbul. if you walk the streets, you prefer on weekdays. Because very crowded at the weekends.
Everyone like to travel Istanbul but some people like to live in the Istanbul. For example, me.
In addition, Istanbul is big dream everyone. But my city… maybe.
My city is Nevsehir. Nevsehir is a small city. Nevsehir is smaller than Istanbul. But hundreds of tourist visit Nevsehir. Because around Nevsehir is Coppadocia. For example, Urgup, Uchisar (the ‘c’ in this place name is a ‘ch’ sound), Goreme… if you like take photos you could visit Goreme.
Nevsehir isn’t crowded noisy. I live Avanos of Nevsehir. Avanos and around city famous for pottery. if you visit in my city, you can try. You can make a pottery. Avanos smaller than Nevsehir but is good I guess probably about 11 am. That’s it. Istanbul is my dream city, Avanos is my city.”
“Next holiday
I have a lot of plans for summer. Maybe I will go to English Arabic courses. Because two language very important for me. I know a little English and a little Arabic. if I go to Berlin with my sister, I will learn English very well. I guess. Maybe I will stay in Istanbul until August. and then I will go to Kayseri for 1 year. Maybe, also I will go to Berlin in October.
I guess that’s plans for holiday, maybe no good plans for holiday but I need to learn different language Berlin or different city, who know?
I live in Avanos. Every tourist knows Coppadocia, but don’t know Avanos. Actually, Avanos in Coppadocia. Coppadocia big region. Goreme, Urgup, Uchisar also in Coppadocia.
My favorite place in my city is Urgup.
Usually, if people want to take a series go to the Urgup. Urgup have got fantastic views Everybody likes Urgup.”
