You are open to listening. You are not in denial. You don't pretend that everything is fine when they aren't. When someone is hurt, we shouldn't say, 'What for?' or 'How can that be? You have had shelter, food and clothing. You've had a fantastic life!'

When someone feels broken, they are broken, and it's an opportunity to figure out how to make them feel less so, and not say, 'But you have all of the basics!'
